ITALIAN FOOD & DRINK

Food plays an essential role in a luxury charter experience. Italian cuisine, in particular, is celebrated for its simplicity, quality ingredients, and deep-rooted culinary traditions. From freshly caught seafood and handmade pasta to sun-ripened tomatoes, buffalo mozzarella, and fragrant olive oil, every meal reflects the rich flavours and culture of southern Italy.

Campania Wines

The region of Campania, with its volcanic soils and proximity to the sea, produces some of southern Italy’s most distinctive wines. While cruising along the Amalfi Coast, three local varieties stand out: Fiano, Greco, and Aglianico.

Fiano di Avellino is an elegant white grape, showing aromas of white flowers, honey, ripe fruit and hazelnut, with a smooth texture and balanced acidity. It pairs well with dishes like spaghetti alle vongole, grilled octopus or fish. Greco di Tufo offers a more mineral and vibrant profile, with citrus, white fruit and almond notes, often with a subtle saline finish. It is ideal with raw seafood, red prawns, buffalo mozzarella or fried fish. Aglianico, the region’s noble red grape, produces structured wines with black cherry, spice and tobacco notes, firm tannins and great ageing potential. It pairs particularly well with lamb, Neapolitan ragù or aged cheeses.

Seafood Scialatielli Pasta

Scialatielli is a thick, slightly rustic pasta native to the Amalfi Coast, traditionally served with fresh seafood such as clams, mussels, prawns, and cherry tomatoes. The pasta’s texture perfectly captures the rich yet delicate seafood sauce, infused with garlic, olive oil, and fragrant herbs. Often enjoyed overlooking the sea, this dish captures the essence of Campania’s coastal cuisine.

Neapolitan Pizza

Originating in Naples, authentic Neapolitan pizza features soft fermented dough topped with San Marzano tomatoes, buffalo mozzarella, and fresh basil before being cooked in a blazing wood-fired oven. The result is a delicate balance of airy crust, vibrant tomato flavour, and creamy cheese. Best enjoyed fresh from the oven, it represents one of Italy’s most celebrated culinary traditions and is even protected by UNESCO as part of the country’s intangible cultural heritage.

Crudo di Mare

A speciality of southern Italy’s coastal restaurants, crudo di mare showcases the exceptional freshness of Mediterranean seafood. Delicately prepared raw fish, prawns, langoustines, and shellfish are served simply with olive oil, lemon, and sea salt, allowing the natural flavours to take centre stage. We recommend this gastronomic treat be enjoyed while watching a beautiful Italian sunset with a chilled glass of white wine; it is one of the most elegant and authentic dining experiences along the Amalfi Coast.

Plan Tender Transfers for Shore Visits

Many Amalfi Coast towns, particularly Positano, are best accessed by tender rather than docking directly in a marina. Keeping swimwear, comfortable shoes, and a light layer ready for shore excursions makes spontaneous visits easy.

Ask Your Captain About Secret Swim Caves

Beyond the famous Blue Grotto, the coastline hides numerous lesser-known sea caves and grottoes that only experienced captains regularly visit. These quiet locations offer extraordinary turquoise water and complete privacy away from tour boats. Many remain hidden from casual visitors, accessible only by small boats and local knowledge. Reaching them offers the rare feeling of discovering a secluded corner of coastline that feels exclusive to those exploring by yacht.

Plan Shore Visits Around Ferry Schedules

Large ferries arrive in Capri, Positano, and Amalfi throughout the morning and early afternoon. Exploring towns outside these peak arrival windows allows you to enjoy quieter streets, easier restaurant access, and a more relaxed atmosphere.

Yachts surround the island of Capri.

Watch For Restricted Zones Around Capri

Certain swimming areas and coastal sections near Capri are protected marine zones where anchoring or water toys may be restricted. Experienced captains know the permitted areas where yachts can still anchor, and you can swim safely, avoiding potential fines from harbour authorities.

DID YOU KNOW?

Beyond its breathtaking scenery, the Naples and Amalfi Coast region is rich in fascinating history and cultural moments that have helped shape its global reputation.

  • The island of Capri served as the retreat of Roman Emperor Tiberius, who ruled the Roman Empire from here for much of his reign between AD 27 and 37. Seeking distance from the politics of Rome, he transformed the island into an imperial sanctuary, building a network of luxurious villas across its rugged cliffs. The most famous of these, Villa Jovis, sits dramatically on the island’s eastern headland nearly 300 metres above the sea. Even today, the ruins reveal vast terraces, ancient cisterns, and panoramic views across the Bay of Naples, offering a glimpse into the extraordinary lifestyle of Rome’s ruling elite.

  • In the 1960s, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis famously holidayed in Capri, attracting global media attention and reinforcing the island’s image as a glamorous Mediterranean retreat. Photographs of her strolling through Capri’s elegant piazzas and arriving by yacht quickly circulated around the world. At a time when international travel was becoming more accessible, these high-profile visits helped cement Capri’s reputation as one of the Mediterranean’s most fashionable summer destinations.

  • According to local legend, the town of Amalfi was named after a beautiful sea nymph called Amalfi, who was loved by the mythological hero Hercules. When she died, Hercules was said to have travelled the Mediterranean in search of the most beautiful place in the world to lay her to rest. Upon discovering this dramatic stretch of coastline, with its soaring cliffs and shimmering blue waters, he chose the site as her resting place and named the town in her honour. The legend has endured for centuries and adds a romantic mythological origin to one of Italy’s most famous coastal destinations.
