How far ahead you book depends less on the yacht than on the weeks you have in mind. For July and August in the Mediterranean, the earlier the better. For the Caribbean winter season, we recommend starting around nine months ahead. Booking early is not about urgency; it is about choice. It leaves time to find the right yacht, rather than the one that happens to be free.

As a family yacht brokerage established in 1963, Moncada has helped clients navigate the charter market for generations. Our experience shows that the best time to book depends on your destination, travel dates, party size, and how particular you are about the yacht.

Yacht Charter Booking Times: Season by Season

July and August in the Mediterranean

These are the most requested weeks of the year. Many of our clients reserve next summer’s yacht, or at least agree on it with their broker, as soon as they step ashore from this year’s charter. If you have not, the time to do it is between December and February.

Starting your search in winter gives you a stronger choice of yachts, particularly if you have a preferred cruising area, a particular vessel in mind or fixed dates. Waiting until spring can still work, but the shortlist may be considerably smaller.

June and September

There is usually more choice outside the peak summer weeks. For June, enquiries from April onwards can still find good options. For September, bookings typically come in from May through to August. That is the traditional pattern, but we are seeing it change. With summers growing longer and warmer, more of our clients now avoid July and August and choose September instead. Its best weeks are no longer as easy to secure last-minute as they once were. If your dates are flexible, these months can offer a different way to experience the Mediterranean.

Christmas and New Year in the Caribbean

We recommend starting around nine months ahead for the Caribbean winter season. The wider market usually begins booking the festive weeks in August, by which time the best yachts may already be taken. Christmas and New Year are highly sought-after periods, and this matters most if you want a specific yacht or itinerary, if your party needs a particular cabin configuration, or if you have fixed dates around the holidays.

Our top Caribbean destinations include the Leeward Islands, the Exumas, and the Virgin Islands.

What Affects Yacht Charter Availability?

The number of yachts available is limited, particularly for vessels of 30 metres and above in each cruising area. Demand is also concentrated around a handful of peak weeks, rather than being evenly spread across the season. Repeat clients contribute to this pattern. Many return to the same yacht year after year, sometimes reserving their next charter before the current one has even finished. As a result, those weeks may be committed long before the wider market begins planning.

Events also influence availability in many locations, particularly on the Côte d’Azur. The Cannes Film Festival, the Monaco Grand Prix, and the Monaco Yacht Show, for example, attract visitors who want to charter during specific dates. Yachts in the area can be reserved well in advance around these events, particularly when clients want to combine a charter with attending.

The result is that a yacht you like may be available for one set of dates but not another. Starting early gives your broker more scope to find an alternative before the options narrow.

Booking For A Party of 8 To 12 Guests

Larger parties should start their search as early as possible. Charter yachts are generally limited to 12 guests, and vessels with five or six cabins that can comfortably accommodate eight to twelve people are considerably fewer in number. The challenge is not simply finding a yacht with enough berths. Cabin arrangements, onboard spaces, and the overall layout all matter when several couples, families, or friends are travelling together.

If you are planning for eight to twelve guests, early booking gives you a better chance of finding a yacht with the right configuration. It is especially important for peak summer weeks, Christmas, and New Year, when demand is already high.

What Does Last Minute Really Mean?

Last-minute charters happen for different reasons, and they suit different people.

  • When plans change unexpectedly

Occasionally, a yacht that was already booked cannot sail, perhaps because of a technical problem shortly before departure. This is when a broker matters most. The task is to find a replacement that matches what the client had chosen, at very short notice. With good contacts in the market, it is sometimes possible to secure a comparable or even better yacht for the same rate.

  • When flexibility is the priority

Some clients are happy to wait and take whatever is still available. Rates can occasionally be more favourable, but the trade-off is choice: the yacht, crew and sometimes the itinerary will be whatever the market has left, rather than what you would have picked.

  • When yachts have gaps to fill

Many central agents, who manage yacht calendars on behalf of their owners, offer attractive terms on weeks that remain open close to the departure date. For a flexible client working with a good broker, these can be real opportunities.

If you have fixed dates, a larger group or a particular yacht in mind, waiting is rarely worth it. If you are flexible, tell us, and we will let you know when the right opening appears.

What Happens After You Book A Yacht Charter?

Once you have chosen your yacht and agreed on the dates, the booking is formalised through a charter contract. The contract sets out the terms of the charter, including the payment schedule and the responsibilities of each party.

You will then arrange the agreed payments and discuss the Advance Provisioning Allowance (APA), which covers running expenses during the charter, such as fuel, food, drinks, and berthing where applicable. Your captain will generally manage these expenses, with a record of expenditure provided during or after the trip, and any unused balance will be returned to you.

Before departure, you will also complete a preference sheet covering details such as food, drinks, activities, and other onboard arrangements. This gives the captain and crew time to prepare for your arrival.

Plan Your Yacht Charter With Moncada

Booking at the right time depends on your dates, destination, party size, and expectations. For peak summer weeks, festive Caribbean charters and larger parties, starting early gives you the strongest choice. For quieter periods, or if you can be flexible, there may still be good opportunities closer to departure.

Whether you are considering a particular yacht or would like to compare different options, our brokers can help you understand what is available and when to decide.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I still book a Christmas yacht charter in October?

Yes, it is possible, although availability will be more limited. If you are flexible about the yacht, there may still be suitable options. If you have a particular vessel in mind, booking earlier is advisable.

Is six months enough time to book a yacht charter?

Six months can be enough for many charters, particularly in June or September. For peak summer months in the Mediterranean or for larger parties needing five or six cabins, an earlier search gives you more choice. For the Caribbean winter season, including Christmas and New Year, we recommend starting around nine months ahead.

Can I request a specific crew when booking a yacht charter?

You can ask whether a particular crew will be available for your charter, although this cannot always be guaranteed. If you have chartered a yacht before and particularly enjoyed the crew, let us know so we can check availability for your preferred dates.

Can I charter a yacht in one destination and finish in another?

Yes, some yacht charters can be arranged with a different embarkation and disembarkation point. This depends on the yacht’s schedule, cruising area, and any additional costs associated with the route, so it is worth discussing your preferred itinerary with us.
